Mel Donohoe is a civil war.
Mel declared herself a civil war almost seven years ago. In 2009, she supported this statement with a purely theoretical action – a declaration of death or “practice in a state of auto-destruct”. Now, commanded by a state of civil unrest and monopolised by an ‘unfreedom’ to practice as practice, Mel has started to document herself in reverse in order to understand how she might begin to end the war.
Working in performance art, installation, text and critical drawing, Mel uses conflict to raise awareness and challenge comfortable institutions. Her work is untidy and multi-vocal, complex with a simple aesthetic, and always collaborative.
She is a teacher and lecturer in Fine Art & Performance.
